|---|---|
| Who needs it | Owners who rent, advertise or offer a single detached dwelling for less than 28 consecutive days. One single-family dwelling per property. Hunt camps, trailers, park models, duplexes, triplexes and multi-unit dwellings are prohibited as STRAs. [source] |

| Renewal window | Submit renewals between October 1 and December 15 for the following calendar year (By-law s.5.1). [source] |
| Late renewal | Missing the window means the registration is revoked (s.5.1). Any later application is treated as a new application under Part 4, with the new-application requirements and, per the fee schedule, the $350 application fee. [source] |
| Expiry | December 31 of the registration year (s.11.1). Also expires on sale or transfer of the property. [source] |

- 2026-12-31: Trent Lakes 2026 registrations expire
Watch out
The by-law is internally inconsistent. Section 7.3 says a renewed registration is valid "until December 31st of the following year", but section 11.1 and the municipal FAQ both say it expires December 31 of the registration year. This page treats renewal as an annual Oct 1 to Dec 15 task. Confirm with the municipality.
Tax angle (federal)
Since 2024, the Income Tax Act (s.67.7) has denied deductions for expenses tied to a non-compliant short-term rental. That means a rental of under 90 consecutive days in a place that doesn't permit it, or that doesn't meet all provincial and municipal registration, licence or permit requirements. The denial is prorated by non-compliant days, and the normal reassessment time limits don't apply.
